Statement Attributed to FARC-EP Declares Truce for Colombian Elections

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) apparently announced a unilateral ceasefire starting midnight on May 20 and running through June 10, saying the measure aims to let Colombians vote in upcoming elections without armed disruption, while warning it will retaliate against any attack by state forces.

A statement circulating on digital platforms since Friday, May 15, claims the FARC-EP has ordered all its fronts, columns, and companies to completely halt offensive military operations against public forces nationwide. The truce is set to begin at midnight on May 20 and last until June 10.

However, the group cautioned that it retains an absolute right to self-defense. According to the communiqué, any incursion by the Colombian army, U.S. agencies, or other armed actors operating in FARC-EP areas of influence will be met with immediate retaliation.

The insurgent organization strongly rejected what it called media and political manipulation aimed at exploiting the armed conflict to benefit traditional political sectors at the ballot box.

The statement closed with traditional slogans honoring the group’s leadership and its ongoing social and political agenda.

The text emerged amid tight institutional security and international monitoring of the legislative and presidential elections.
