Palestinian organizations and Resistance factions marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba by denouncing ongoing displacement and military escalation across Palestinian territories.Palestinian groups say mass displacement, war and settlement expansion continue 78 years after the 1948 Nakba
Palestinians marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba on Friday amid ongoing displacement, military operations in Gaza and expanding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Palestinian institutions and Resistance factions described current developments as a continuation of the process that began in 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced during the establishment of the state of Israel.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, around 957,000 Palestinians were displaced during the Nakba from a population of 1.4 million people living in approximately 1,300 towns and villages at the time. The bureau also reported that Israeli forces took control of 774 localities, destroying 531 of them completely, while more than 70 massacres were documented during that period.
The bureau estimates the global Palestinian population at approximately 15.5 million people, including 7.4 million in historic Palestine and around 8.1 million in the diaspora, most of them living in Arab countries.
For Palestinians commemorating the anniversary, May 15, 1948 remains not only a historical event but an ongoing reality shaped by displacement, refugee camps, border restrictions and repeated military escalation.
Palestinian factions reaffirm right of return
In coordinated statements issued Friday, Palestinian Resistance factions reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right of return and self-determination, while rejecting Israeli sovereignty over Palestinian land.
The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas said Palestinians continue to face ongoing Israeli attacks against civilians and religious sites 78 years after the Nakba. The movement referred to what it described as a continuing “war of extermination and starvation” in the Gaza Strip, alongside repeated violations of ceasefire agreements and attacks on civilians.
Hamas also stated that Israeli policies in the occupied West Bank and al-Quds, including settlement expansion, repeated incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque and demographic change measures, represent a continuation of the Nakba.
The movement said that “the weapons of resistance are linked to the existence of the occupation,” rejecting attempts to disarm Palestinian factions while Israeli occupation continues.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement said the Israeli project targets not only Palestine but the broader Arab and Islamic region. The group accused Israel of continuing military operations in Gaza while expanding settlements, confiscating land and targeting religious sites, including Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Ibrahimi Mosque.
Islamic Jihad also warned against measures targeting Palestinian prisoners and what it described as systematic attempts to erase the refugee issue and the right of return.
The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement said this year’s Nakba anniversary comes amid continued attacks on Gaza, the West Bank and al-Quds, alongside what it called escalating campaigns of “extermination and ethnic cleansing.”
The movement stated that Palestinians continue to confront these developments despite what it described as international silence and Western support for Israel. It also called resistance “the strategic choice of the Palestinian people” and urged greater Palestinian unity.
The statements concluded by affirming that Palestinians remain committed to their land and national rights despite decades of displacement and conflict.
