Beijing urged the continuation of diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran and called for the reopening of maritime routes in the region. Beijing says dialogue between Washington and Tehran must continue after recent ceasefire developments
China called for consolidating the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, warning that the conflict “should never have happened” and should not be allowed to escalate further.
The statement was issued by China’s Foreign Ministry after talks in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to the ministry, reaching “a solution as soon as possible” in the Middle East would benefit both Tehran and Washington, as well as neighboring countries and the broader international community.
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the ceasefire had created an opening for diplomacy and stressed that the channel for dialogue “must not be closed again.” The spokesperson also urged the reopening of maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, “as soon as possible.”
The ministry added that ending the conflict “would benefit both the United States and Iran, as well as countries in the region and the world at large.”
China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi and Trump discussed “major bilateral and global issues” during their meeting and reached “a series of new understandings.”
Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday night for the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to China in nearly nine years, and his second trip to the country since November 2017.
