U.S. official report shows trade deficit growth

The US trade deficit last August amounted to 54.9 billion dollars, after having fallen the previous month, the Commerce Department said today.

The new sum equals an increase of 1.6 percent compared to the 54 billion dollars in July's red figures.

According to the official report, in August of 2019 exports grew 0.5 percent to 262 billion 800 million dollars. At the same time, imports also rose 0.2 percent to 207.9 billion dollars.

In relation to the record from January to August 2018, the accumulated deficit at that stage of this year rose 7.1 percent, to 428 billion 700 million dollars, the source said.

News reports confirmed that in August the aforementioned negative difference exceeded the forecast of experts in the matter.

On the other hand, the US deficit with China, in the midst of the Washington commercial war against Beijing, was reduced by $ 28.9 billion, 700 million less than the July figure.

With respect to the same period of 2018, in the aforementioned eight months of 2019, such imbalance decreased 11.4 percent, and according to several sources it could be further reduced taking into account the mutual application of new tariffs since September.

In the opinion of U.S. President Donald Trump, the persistent imbalances of this type are due to abusive practices of business partners against his country.

Also, the Republican president mentions the bad agreements that leave American companies at a disadvantage or encourage them to move their factories abroad.

Meanwhile, for many economists, deficits are fundamentally a consequence of the United States systematically spending more than it produces.
