Sustainable Development Goals Summit expects more commitments

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit this Wednesday sees its final session, with growing expectations for further commitments from the UN member States to do more to achieve the goals.

At the opening yesterday, the President of the General Assembly in its 74th session, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, pointed out that it is necessary to think of new ways to speed up the fulfillment of the SDGs.

The report 'The Future is Now: Science to Achieve Sustainable Development,' written by a group of independent scientists, underscores that a change in world production patterns is needed to achieve the SDGs and protect the planet.

While reaching the SDGs by 2030 is still possible, this requires a radical and urgent transformation in terms of economic, environmental and social management.

Tackling climate change, protecting biodiversity and reducing the high levels of existing inequalities are some compelling strategies to follow, the 250-page text indicates.

According to the research, it is not possible to continue generating economic growth based on increasing consumption of material goods: that is not a viable option worldwide.

The current global development model brings the world closer to turning points in the global climate system and biodiversity, emphasizes the report.

Estimates indicate that the use of planetary resources will double from 2017 to 2060, and this will lead to a rise in emissions of toxic, polluting and greenhouse gases.

Given this phenomenon, the report suggests, developed countries have to change their production and consumption patterns, limit the use of fossil fuels and plastics and encourage the public and private sector to invest in line with the SDGs.
