Iran and P4+1 nuclear deal signatories meet at UN

The signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Iran-P4+1 are meeting on Wednesday to discuss how to save the nuclear deal considered a milestone of international diplomacy.

Officials from France, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and Germany are summoned to this meeting, plus the head of European Union foreign policy Federica Mogherini.

According to a statement from the European External Action Service, these countries will discuss ways to ensure the full and effective application of the nuclear deal sealed in 2015 between Tehran and six world powers.

The agreement fell into crisis with the withdrawal in May 2018 of the US by President Donald Trump who imposed coercive measures against the Islamic Republic.

Iran waited a year for a reaction from European signatories, which did not comply with their commitments although they expressed their support, and offered no concrete actions to save the agreement.

In response, Iran began to reduce its obligations under the JCPOA, under articles 26 and 36.

Tehran says the measures will be reversed as soon as Europe finds practical ways to protect the Iranian economy from US unilateral sanctions.
