Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Affairs this Thursday expressed concern over a US plan to permit extended periods of detention for migrant children and adolescents.
The statement is related to the announcement by the US Department of Homeland Security that it would terminate the 'Flores Agreement,' which limited the detention of minors to a period of twenty days.
According to Mexican authorities, this new regulation, which is expected to enter into force in 60 days, means that minors could be held in detention centers indefinitely, as migrant families would be held for as long as it takes for their immigration cases to be decided.
In accordance with Mexico's unwavering commitment to protect migrant children and adolescents, the Undersecretary for North America will provide timely monitoring of the real conditions at US detention centers and continue to offer consular services to any Mexican family that may be held under the new conditions.
Finally, the Mexican government will be attentive to the implementation of this new regulation and any possible court challenges that may arise regarding its application.
Likewise, supported by the Mexican Civil Rights Advisory Groups (MCRAG) in the United States, the appropriate legal alternatives will be evaluated.
