Protesters and political activists gathered Monday outside the National Electoral Council headquarters in Quito to reject the nine-month provisional suspension of the Amigo movement, which prevents the organization from participating in November’s local elections.
The Electoral Contentious Tribunal ordered the measure after admitting acting Attorney General Carlos Alarcón’s complaint over alleged money laundering in a confidential investigation. Amigo had included Citizen Revolution figures on its lists, a movement also suspended for nine months in March over alleged illicit financing in the “Caja Chica” case.
Demonstrators called the resolution a “democratic outrage,” political persecution, and authoritarianism by President Daniel Noboa’s government.
Attendees denounced frozen bank accounts for critical sectors and linked the situation to youth unemployment and education deficits, while others called the president a “puppet” and denounced CNE and TCE’s alleged takeover to leave only one political option.
Citizen Revolution activist Alexandra Guarderas asserted a state attempt to impose candidates following successive disqualifications of RC, Reto, and now Amigo.
Meanwhile, CNE president José Cabrera ordered immediate compliance with TCE’s administrative actions, which granted a three-day execution deadline.
Councilor Elena Nájera warned that provisional suspension through an admission order violates due process and participatory rights, though she noted the electoral body must comply with the judicial order.
Human rights organizations also rejected the suspension, while Citizen Revolution president Gabriela Rivadeneira confirmed alliances with other parties whose names she withheld for fear of institutional reprisals.
The Citizen Revolution caucus in the National Assembly submitted a request to change the agenda for Tuesday’s Plenary session through memorandum AN-DALE-2026-0113-M, signed by legislator Liliana Durán. The legislative initiative seeks partial declassification of fiscal file number 170101826072291, requesting access to documents sent to the TCE, personnel actions, notifications, and general justification documents to verify the Prosecutor’s Office’s legal actions.
