Chilean Senator Fabiola Campillai plans to summon Carabineros Director Marcelo Araya and the presidential delegate for the Santiago Metropolitan Region, Germán Codina, before the Senate Human Rights Commission on Thursday to explain police procedures and the use of disproportionate force against a student march on Wednesday.
The repression left numerous injured including a law student with facial fractures requiring surgery.
The Confederation of Chilean Students had called the mobilization to protest President José Antonio Kast’s neoliberal measures, specifically cuts to health and education. As marchers walked along Alameda Avenue, a large contingent of Carabineros attacked with excessive violence.
University of Chile Rector Rosa Devés condemned the aggression, citing a law student who was detained by Carabineros and suffered facial fractures. More than 150 academics from the same university, including deans, National Prize winners, and former ministers, signed a declaration expressing their “deepest concern and categorical condemnation” of the repression, warning that punitive responses to social demands are a “profound historical error.”
The Socialist Party called the police actions unacceptable and demanded a thorough, transparent investigation to establish responsibilities and prevent recurrence.
