Diaz-Canel rejects U.S. measures targeting Cuban senior officials, relatives and entities.
On Thursday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned new threats by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump against his country and the expansion of economic sanctions against Cuban officials and their relatives.
“The U.S. president has made new threatening statements against Cuba, and the Treasury Department has added new names of Cuban leaders, organizations and companies to an illegitimate sanctions list.
They are aimed at reinforcing the blockade measures and the conflict scenario between Cuba and the United States. This political blindness adds to the coercive measures applied against our country in recent weeks, designed to harm the Cuban people.
The aggressiveness and perversity of the Yankee government will clash with our determination to face the worst scenarios and resist the imperial offensive,” he said.
Earlier, the Treasury Department imposed financial sanctions on Diaz-Canel, his wife, Lis Cuesta, his stepson, Manuel Anido Cuesta, Col. Alejandro Castro Espin, son of former President Raul Castro, and the latter’s grandson, Raul Alejandro Castro Calis.
The Trump administration also sanctioned Cuba’s Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), a network of neighborhood associations created to organize popular support for the Cuban revolution.
The list of sanctioned entities also includes the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, mining company La Victoria — dedicated to the extraction of nonferrous metals — and travel agency Amistur.
The sanctions prohibit financial and commercial transactions with the designated individuals and entities, whose assets under U.S. jurisdiction are blocked.
This latest round of sanctions is part of the pressure strategy the Trump administration is exerting on Cuba to force economic and political changes on the island. The Cuban government insists that any change in the country must be decided by the Cuban people and alleges that the United States is preparing a military aggression against the island.
On Thursday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez rejected the inclusion of President Diaz-Canel, part of his family, institutions, civil society organizations and Cuban companies on a list maintained by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
“This is the latest example of the U.S. interventionist plan to portray Cuba as a threat to the national security of the United States. Every U.S. action aimed at creating a conflict scenario between the two countries is destined to fail. Every threat against Cuba’s independence and sovereignty will be met with greater unity and determination from our people,” he said.
