Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday, in discussions centered on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and global stability amid what Xi described as a rapidly shifting international environment.

Xi said that a “transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe,” adding that the international situation is “fluid and turbulent.” He framed the meeting as part of a broader historical moment confronting major powers.

He raised key questions about the trajectory of China-U.S. relations, including whether both countries can overcome the “Thucydides Trap,” jointly address global challenges, and contribute to greater international stability.

“I look forward to working together with you to set the course and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations, so as to make 2026 a historic, landmark year that opens up a new chapter in China-U.S. relations,” Xi said.

Xi stated that both sides had agreed on a new vision of a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability,” intended to guide ties over the next three years and beyond.

He defined this framework as combining cooperation as the foundation, managed competition, controlled differences, and long-term commitments to stability. He emphasized that this approach must translate into concrete policy actions rather than remain declaratory.

On economic ties, Xi described China-U.S. relations as “mutually beneficial and win-win in nature,” stressing that “equal-footed consultation is the only right choice” in managing disagreements.

He also said that the two countries’ economic and trade teams had reached “generally balanced and positive outcomes” in recent talks held on Wednesday, calling the result “good news for the people of the two countries and the world.”

Xi reiterated that China would continue expanding its opening up and said U.S. companies are already deeply involved in its reform process. He called for expanded cooperation in sectors including economy, health, agriculture, tourism, and law enforcement.

On Taiwan, Xi identified it as “the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,” warning that improper handling could destabilize the entire bilateral relationship and urging caution from the U.S. side.

Trump said it was “a great honor” to pay a state visit to China, expressing “tremendous respect” for Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, and describing Xi as a great leader.

He said he was willing to work with Xi to strengthen communication, manage differences, and improve bilateral relations, adding that both leaders could “do a lot of big and good things for the two countries and the world.”

Trump also encouraged U.S. business representatives to expand cooperation with China.

According to details from the meeting, Xi later received a delegation of senior executives from major global technology and financial corporations accompanying the U.S. president. The executives joined the talks at the Great Hall of the People, in a session that lasted more than two hours.

The two leaders also exchanged views on international and regional issues, including the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula. Both sides agreed to support each other in hosting upcoming APEC and G20 meetings.

The meeting signaled an effort by both governments to stabilize relations through structured engagement, expanded economic dialogue, and managed geopolitical differences, including sensitive security issues.
