Any U.S. military action would have devastating regional consequences, the Cuban President warns.
On Monday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated that his country has the “absolute and legitimate right to defend itself”.
“Cuba, which is already suffering from multidimensional aggression by the U.S., does have the absolute and legitimate right to defend itself against a military offensive, which cannot logically or honestly be used as an excuse to impose a war against the noble Cuban people,” he stressed.
“Cuba does not represent a threat and has no aggressive plans or intentions against any country. It does not have them against the U.S., nor has it ever had them, something that nation’s government knows well, especially its defense and national security agencies,” Diaz-Canel reiterated.
The Cuban president also pointed out that the party truly threatening another country with “military aggression” is Washington and that this, in itself, already constitutes “an international crime.”
Diaz-Canel warned that a U.S. military attack on his country would have devastating consequences for both sides and the region. “If it materializes, it will trigger bloodshed with incalculable consequences, in addition to the destructive impact on regional peace and stability.”
Through those statements, Diaz-Canel responded to information published on Sunday by Axios, a U.S. news outlet that claims Cuba has acquired Iranian and Russian military drones.
Axios cited statements from a senior intelligence official according to which the U.S. is assessing the threat posed by Cuban drones that could be sent against the Guantanamo Base, U.S. military vessels or Key West, Florida. It also claims that Iranian military advisers are present in Havana. This information adds to Washington’s potential arguments for justifying military action against the Cuban Revolution.
Currently, relations between Cuba and the United States are experiencing one of their most tense moments in decades due to U.S. threats of military aggression against the island and Washington’s demands for political and economic reforms.
On Sunday, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stated that Cuba “defends peace and is preparing itself to confront external aggression through the exercise of the right to legitimate self-defense recognized by the U.N. Charter.”
“Without any legitimate excuse whatsoever, the U.S. government is building, day after day, a fraudulent case to justify ruthless economic warfare against the Cuban people and possible military aggression,” he stressed on social media.
