The Peruvian Police detained an armed man during a rally of presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez, representing Juntos por el Perú, at the Centenario Square in Huaral, while Sánchez continued delivering his speech as officers formed a human cordon to search and remove the individual.
The National Police of Peru reported that the detained individual has a license to carry weapons but was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, prompting breathalyzer tests. His detention was formalized for the alleged commission of a crime against public safety (common danger): use of a weapon while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
Local media frame the incident as a potential attempt to attack the candidate.
Separately, police used tear gas to disperse protesters demonstrating against the presence of Keiko Fujimori during political activities in the city. Two people were arrested.
The night before, during a campaign event in Manchay, Sánchez had announced he would visit Huaral. He is scheduled to appear in Huacho and Pachacútec in the following days, then travel to the regions of Ucayali, Loreto, Pasco, Huánuco, Piura, Ica, and Arequipa.
