Ukrainian Attack Kills Worker at Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant

Strike comes after Chernobyl anniversary, raises safety concerns.

On Monday, a Ukrainian drone attack killed an employee of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and under Russian control since March 2022.

“Today, as a result of an attack by a drone of the Armed Forces of Ukraine against the transport workshop of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, a driver died,” the plant’s administration posted on the Russian messaging network MAX.

The plant’s management described the incident as an “irreparable loss and a great tragedy” and stressed that the victim’s relatives will receive all necessary support and assistance.

“Employees of the nuclear sector must not become targets. Any attack on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is a threat not only to those who work there but to security in general. It is an attack on life and the future,” it concluded.

The attack took place just after the 40th anniversary on Sunday of the worst nuclear disaster in history, which occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Since the Russian special military operation began in February 2022, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly attacked the Zaporozhye plant.

A team of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency is permanently stationed at the facility to monitor plant safety.
