Trump Says Iran Requested Ceasefire, Links Decision to Strait of Hormuz
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran has requested a “ceasefire” and indicated he will consider that possibility once the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened.
“Iran’s new regime president, much less radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!,” the Republican leader said on Truth Social without specifying which Iranian leader he was referring to.
“We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!,” he added.
Trump is expected to deliver a “major” address to the nation at 9 p.m. Washington time to provide an update on the war, in a message that comes after a series of comments about the possible end of the conflict.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the U.S. president said he plans to “withdraw” from Iran in “two or three weeks,” asserting that the objectives of the war that began Feb. 28 — such as preventing the Islamic Republic from obtaining a nuclear weapon — are being achieved.
After unsuccessfully attempting to lead a military coalition with allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the issue of Hormuz is no longer a matter for the United States. He urged NATO countries and Asian nations to act with “courage” and “take” the strait, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes.
“We will be leaving [Iran] very soon, and if France or some other country wants to get oil or gas, they will go up through the Hormuz Strait, and will be able to fend for themselves. But we have nothing to do with that. What happens in the Strait — we aren’t going to have anything to do with it,” he said.
In an interview published Wednesday by the British newspaper The Telegraph, Trump said he does not rule out withdrawing the United States from NATO, an organization he described as a “paper tiger.”
