Moscow links increase to recent logistics shifts following the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
On Wednesday, Russian Deputy Transport Minister Dmitry Zverev said maritime cargo transport between Russia and Iran via the Caspian Sea will increase considerably.
“We expect a significant rise in shipments of grain, metals, timber and many other goods. Iran’s ports on the Caspian and the Russian ports of Astrakhan and Makhachkala are ready for this,” he said during an international logistics and transport forum held in St. Petersburg.
Zverev linked the situation to “logistical changes that have occurred over the past month” due to the war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
In 2025, before the start of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, trade between Russia and Iran reached around 7.2 million tons of cargo.
In November last year, Moscow and Tehran signed a memorandum on the creation of a consortium of shipping and port companies from both countries.
“We now understand that we can continue moving forward both in terms of the status of the routes and in increasing cargo volumes to export levels we had never reached before,” Zverev said.
Russia has condemned the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran from the outset and has offered to act as a mediator in seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
