External enemies may seek to destabilize the Russian society before September vote.
On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned about the possibility that foreign actors may attempt to influence elections to the Lower House (Duma) scheduled for September.
“We understand that the elections will be held under complex conditions, and our opponents — let’s call them that, or rather enemies, primarily external — will try to take advantage of any opportunity to fracture and destabilize Russian society,” he said.
Nevertheless, Putin expressed confidence that “these attempts will be thwarted, and voters will prefer political programs, ideas, patriots and people willing to act constructively.”
“As of today, we understand that the most important thing is to stay united, that only through our unity will we achieve the objectives of the special military operation in Ukraine.”
According to recent polls, if the Duma elections were held next Sunday, the ruling party United Russia would receive around 30% of the vote. It is followed with about 10% by the ultranationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and “New People,” a party created just six years ago.
From Sept. 18 to 20, Russia will hold its first Duma elections since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. Russians are called to elect 450 legislators through party lists and single-member districts. The 2026 election process will also take place in 11 single-member districts established in territories liberated by Russian forces.
According to the New Eurasian Strategies Centre, the parties that will participate in the Duma elections include United Russia, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, New People, A Just Russia – For Truth, Yabloko, The Greens, Rodina, Civic Platform, Communists of Russia, the Party of Pensioners, and the Party of Direct Democracy.
