Afghan authorities stated that no foreign nationals have been held for political leverage or deal.
On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated Afghanistan as a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,” arguing that the Taliban continue to use hostage-taking and kidnapping as mechanisms to negotiate politically or obtain economic gains.
“The Taliban continue to use terrorist tactics to seek policy concessions, but it won’t work under this administration. The Taliban must release Dennis Coyle, Mahmood Habibi, and all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan,” he posted on X.
On Tuesday, the Afghan Foreign Affairs Ministry described the United States’ decision to label Afghanistan as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention” as regrettable, emphasizing that no foreign nationals have been held for political leverage or deals.
The ministry clarified that certain individuals have been detained solely on charges of violating Afghan laws, with many released through standard legal processes upon completion of investigations.
It also highlighted that over the past year, Afghanistan has made goodwill gestures in handling cases involving some detained U.S. nationals, demonstrating positive steps toward resolution. Discussions between Afghan and U.S. officials have taken place at various levels, facilitated by Qatar.
During these talks, both sides have committed to undertaking several constructive measures to address mutual concerns. The Afghan government expressed its desire for the issue to be resolved amicably through continued dialogue and engagement, underscoring a commitment to fostering improved bilateral relations.
Afghanistan “is the second country to be designated as such, and the announcement comes on Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day,” CNN mentioned, recalling that the administration of President Donald Trump also designated Iran as “a state sponsor of wrongful detention the day before it launched military operations against the country.”
