Putin Supports Iran After Mojtaba Khamenei Chosen As Ayatollah

The Russian president expresses solidarity with Tehran after assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia’s “unwavering” support for Iran following the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, in the country’s leadership after the latter died on the first day of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

“Russia has been and will continue to be a reliable partner of the Islamic Republic. I wish you success in the difficult tasks you face,” Putin said in a congratulatory message released by the Russian presidency.

The Kremlin chief reaffirmed Moscow’s “unwavering” support for Tehran and solidarity with “Iranian friends.” Putin stressed that Khamenei’s son’s mandate requires “great courage and dedication” as the Persian nation faces an armed aggression.

“I trust that you will honorably continue your father’s work and unite the Iranian people during these harsh trials,” he said.

On Friday, Putin spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, to whom he reiterated Moscow’s condolences over the assassination of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family.

The Russian leader called for a rapid return to diplomacy and noted that he maintains constant contact with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its solidarity and provided Putin with “detailed” information about the current phase of the conflict.

Previously, on March 1, Putin also sent condolences to Pezeshkian and described Khamenei’s death as a “cynical violation” of all international norms.
