Japanese prime minister resigns due to recurrence of ulcerous colitis

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday announced his resignation because he is suffering again from chronic ulcerous colitis and the treatment might prevent him from handling State matters as required.

The 65-year-old head of Government told a news conference about his recent visits to the hospital for medical checkups, and said it was a tough decision that he regrets having made amid the Covid-19 pandemic, without either closing the peace deal with Russia or amending the Constitution.

Shinzo Abe noted that the most important thing in politics is to get results and he would never take wrong measures due to any disease or lack of physical strength.

He assured that he cannot remain in the post, because he does not have the capacity to respond with confidence to the Japanese people's mandate.

However, he will remain in office until his successor is elected.
