Russia denounces maneuvers to exclude MAS from Bolivian elections

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the de facto government established after last November's coup d'état in Bolivia to guarantee the participation of all political forces in the elections, including the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS).

The Ministry called on all political forces and above all the de facto government of Bolivia to guarantee the people of that country the conditions to exercise their political right to elect their new leadership.

The international community expects the coup government to take 'effective and responsible measures to prepare for an electoral process with the participation of all political forces,' Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Prensa Latina.

There are concerns that the newly elected Bolivian Electoral Tribunal (TEB) could suspend the registration of MAS, led by ousted president Evo Morales, for allegedly falsifying the results of last November's elections, Zakharova noted.

The local press recalls that independent experts proved that there was no fraud in the general elections held last year, and acknowledged Evo Morales' victory in the first round, with more than 47 percent of the vote.

However, although the TEB has the prerogative to suspend parties, the electoral law does not provide for any regulation to prohibit the participation of a political entity in elections for the reason of alleged fraud, the spokeswoman clarified.

Moscow also pointed out that MAS reflects a political preference of at least 47 percent (some 3 million) of Bolivians.

For this reason, excluding the party from the electoral process would call into question its legality and make it difficult to resolve the political crisis, Zakharova emphasized.
