Salvadorans hold vigil in solidarity with expelled diplomats

Several Salvadoran groups held a vigil in front of the Venezuelan embassy in El Salvador, in solidarity with diplomats whose expulsion from the country was ordered by President Nayib Bukele.

The social movements responded on Sunday to an emergency call made by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), which rejected the recently announced measure, describing it as an act of servitude to the United States.

Armed with candles, blankets and slogans, those attending the vigil expressed their support for the diplomatic staff representing here the democratically elected government of President Nicolas Maduro, who from Cuba called Bukele a 'traitor and a puppet.'

In response to Bukele's measure, greeted by the US embassy in El Salvador, Venezuela declared all Salvadoran diplomats in the Bolivarian nation persona non grata.

Bukele noted that these officials were appointed by the previous Salvadoran administration, but remained in office and responded to the current administration, led by Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill.
