Protests multiply in Santiago de Chile

Trade unions, taxi drivers, students and other sectors are today leading demonstrations in this capital as part of the call for a 'Super Monday' of mobilizations against the government of Sebastian Piñera, called by the Social Unity Roundtable.

At midday, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the Supreme Court to march to the former National Congress to call on parliamentarians to cease procedures in both chambers relating to bills that the executive intends to pass.

Meanwhile, groups of students marched through along Alameda Avenue in the direction of Baquedano Square, where at 17.00 local time a rally of tens of thousands of people is scheduled to take place, representng one of the largest demonstrations since the outburst of social unrest in this country on October 18, against the government's neoliberal model.

The Alameda was also lined by hundreds of taxi drivers with their cars, whose union leaders managed to reach La Moneda presidential palace, where they delivered a letter addressed to Piñera in which they put forward a series of wage demands and called for the resignation of Transport Minister Gloria Hutt.

In their opinion, Hutt has failed to keep her promises to improve working conditions and wages in the sector. Unions expressed their condemnation of the high cost of tolls, which as explained consume 40 percent of what transport workers earn daily.

Meanwhile, Prensa Latina was able to report that numerous government offices were closed to the public, in compliance with the call of the National Confederation of Tax Employees (Conaef) which, along with other unions, called a national strike on Monday and Tuesday.
