More than 1,000 migrants and refugees have died at sea while trying to cross the Mediterranean this year [File: Darrin Zammit Lupi/Reuters]

 More than a thousand migrants and refugees died so far in 2019 trying to reach Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed today.

The spokesman of that agency of the United Nations, Joel Millman, informed that, from the beginning of the year and until October 6, in the waters of the Mediterranean, one thousand 71 migrants lost their lives, representing 55 percent of the two 1,289 deaths during the same period of 2018.

On the other hand, 76 thousand 558 migrants were able to arrive at the same stage in the same stage, a figure 13, which is certainly lower compared to the previous year.

According to IOM, Greece was the country that received the highest number of migrants in 2019, 41 thousand 321 people, followed by Spain, with 19 thousand 443 individuals and Italy, with seven thousand 939 people.

The IOM Missing Migrants Project reported Monday that these deaths bring the total number of deaths on this route to 18,990 since January 1, 2014.

Europe is the scene of the most serious migration crisis since World War II, caused by armed conflicts and economic problems in the Middle East and North Africa.
