North Korea confirms new missile test

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday confirmed test of a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), called Pukguksong-3, and said it opened a new phase in its self-defense capabilities.

According to the KCNA news agency, the Academy of National Defense Sciences successfully performed the maneuver on Wednesday morning in waters off Wonsan Bay.

DPRK leader Kim Jong-un congratulated the scientific units involved in the test on behalf of the Workers' Party.

KCNA said that the operation mark great importance in the country's efforts to curb threats from external forces and at the same time strengthen its self-defense capabilities.

DPRK has recently tested other weapons in the face of joint military exercises South Korea and the United States have been carrying out, as well as the deployment of F-35A fighter jets in the neighboring nation.

In August, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned about the return of the cold war on the peninsula due to these actions, especially the continued entry of lethal weapons, which considers a serious provocation that dashes the joint declarations and agreements Pyongyang and Seoul reached to lower military tensions.

However, the Foreign Ministry reiterated Pyongyang's unchanging position to resolve any issue by peaceful means, dialogue and negotiation, without the shadow of military threats.

In fact, a preliminary contact will be held Friday and then North Korea and the United States will hold a working meeting on Saturday.
