Haitian Senate leader calls on Moïse to resign

Haitian Senate President Carl Murat Cantave called on President Jovenel Moïse to place his post on the negotiating table in order to solve the current crisis in the country.

Cantave invited senators and other members of the different powers of the country to do the same, because 'they are part of the problem.'

In a televised message, three weeks after mass protests at the upper House against the ratification of the ministerial cabinet, Cantave called for dialogue.

'We all have sinned against the people. We all are losers, incompetent and hypocrites,' stressed the lawmaker, who has been accused of mismanaging the Senate, after five frustrated meetings to provide the country with a legitimate government.

Likewise, he insisted not to use the people's naivety 'to rid ourselves of the wrongs that we have all committed,' and referred to the great 'sinners' of yesteryears who offer moral lessons today.

Cantave suggested that all parties should sit down to negotiate and agree on the path to be taken by the country over the next 25 years, through a formal pact of coexistence exclusively based on the interests of the people.

According to Cantave, 'people are hungry; they no longer need empty words.' He added that they do not need 'to be manipulated by politicians who, on either side, mobilize them for personal ends.'
