EU warns Turkey about dangers of military offensive in Syria

The European Union (EU) warned Turkey today that a military offensive in northeastern Syria will exacerbate the suffering of that people and harm efforts to seek a political solution to the crisis.

The EU recognized Ankara's security concerns, but made it clear that any sustainable solution to the conflict in the Arab country will not be achieved by military means but requires a genuine political transition.

It also urged Turkey to ensure the cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians in the Syrian nation.

The Turkish government stressed on Monday that 'it is determined to clean the northeast of Syria from terrorists', in reference to Kurdish forces, supported by the United States, while this country announced the withdrawal of its troops to the possible offensive.

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ankara decided to start a unilateral operation due to the lack of agreement with Washington on the creation of a so-called security zone in northern Syria, rejected by Damascus for considering it illegal.

The Syrian Government describes the Turkish-American agreement as a flagrant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its country and a serious violation of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

Turkey occupies more than six thousand square kilometers of Syrian territory north of the province of Aleppo, and maintains more than a dozen checkpoints around Idleb that did not prevent terrorist incursions against numerous towns.
