Chevron oil company will continue operations in Venezuela

US oil company Chevron Corporation will be able to continue its operations in Venezuela, as announced here today.

According to a report by the Venezuelan News Agency, it was learned that the US Department of Treasury extended for another 90 days the license that allows that company to continue its operations until January 22, 2020. That license also benefits the Halliburton, Schlumberger, Bake and Weatherford.

Last January, the United States sanctioned Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) as part of the coercive and unilateral measures implemented in the blockade that has intensified since 2018 in order to collapse the economy, destabilize the country and cause the forced exit of the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro.

Since then Chevron is one of the few firms in the sector that has remained in the country, but until now it was waiting for the license to be renewed.

Upon hearing the announcement, Chevron spokesman Ray Forh said the company remains focused on maintaining basic business operations in the South American country. Thus it supports the more than eight thousand people working in the institution, something in which the management of the company has insisted all the time, he added.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday it was announced that the European Nynas refinery suspended its purchases of Venezuelan crude before the dilemma of being sanctioned or even facing a judicial process for negotiating with the Bolivarian State.

The firm operates specialized refineries in Sweden, Germany and England, mainly for the production of asphalt and since last January it was operating under a special license.

According to the indications of the Department of the Treasury, the refiner or its affiliates are not authorized to carry out 'transactions or deals related to the purchase or acquisition of petroleum or derivative products of Venezuelan origin, directly or indirectly'.
