Putin reiterates support for Maduro and Venezuela's legitimate gov't

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated this Wednesday his support for 'all legitimate authorities' of Venezuela, while expressing his backing for the dialogue between the government and opposition sectors, on welcoming his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro, to Moscow.

At the beginning of a meeting in the Kremlin, the Russian president sustained that 'any withdrawal of dialogue we consider irrational, harmful to the country and would be a threat to the population's welfare.'

Maduro in turn indicated that Moscow and Caracas 'have shown they can overcome any difficulty together.'

In May, the two sides held a meeting of the high-level intergovernmental commission and many of the issues addressed were successfully resolved in the areas of food, health, energy, among others, Maduro noted.

Putin stated that supplies of Russian agricultural products to Venezuela can be seen as humanitarian cooperation in the midst of the severe economic crisis in the country.

He announced that he will soon send about 1.5 million doses of flu vaccines and plans to provide up to 5 million doses on a regular basis.

He was also pleased by the fact that trade between the two nations has increased by 10% in recent months.

Putin reaffirmed the technical-military cooperation with Venezuela - the largest purchaser of Russian arms and equipment in Latin America - in particular with regard to the supply of spare parts and service centers.

Likewise, he mentioned Russian investments in the Venezuelan energy industry, assuring that Russia has invested about 4 billion dollars in the economy of the country.
