The head of state, Nicolas Maduro, commemorated this Monday the swearing-in of revolutionary leader Hugo Chavez (1954-2013) as the first president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela after the approval of the 1999 Constitution.
'Nineteen years ago, commander Chavez was sworn in as president of the Republic, within the framework of the new constitution, approved by popular will. A historical fact that opened the way to lay the foundations of the New Homeland that we continue to build through hard work and perseverance,' the president wrote on Twitter.
'Thus we made a popular commitment, to the constituent elections that opened the floodgates to a new phase, with which we peacefully and democratically removed the dominant components of the old political order,' said the leader of the Venezuelan Revolution on that occasion.
In February 1999, Chavez promised to hold a referendum to elect a National Constituent Assembly in order to give effect to the new Constitution, which made it possible to hold elections to legitimize popularly elected posts that include the President of the Republic, with the extension of the six-year term.
On July 30, 2000, the Venezuelan people ratified Hugo Chavez as the legitimate president of the South American nation.
