The European Union (EU) supported this Wednesday the governments of Denmark and Greenland in their rejection of selling that Arctic territory to the US, as President Donald Trump has requested.
'The [European] Commission fully subscribes to and supports the positions that have been expressed both by the prime minister of Denmark and the government of Greenland,' assured the spokeswoman for the EU Executive, Natasha Bertaud.
These statements were issued amid a wave of reactions after Trump's trip to Denmark was suspended, scheduled for September 2 and 3, in response to Bertaud's refusal to discuss the purchase of the world's largest island, rich in natural resources and with important strategic value for the US.
The Danish Royal House plainly replied that the news is a surprise but the Nordic country's political class described it as an insult.
On Sunday, Frederiksen assured that 'Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic. I persistently hope that this is not something that is seriously meant.'
On the other hand, lawmaker Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, who occupies one of the two seats reserved for the island in the Danish Parliament, celebrated Denmark's rejection of 'Circus Trump.'
