China Warns of Escalation of Trade War with US

China reiterated that a new increase in tariffs by the United States on its goods, as announced recently by President Donald Trump, will invariable lead to an escalation of the trade war between the two powers.

The Chinese Trade Ministry reaffirmed that it will take countermeasures if Washington finally implements the 10% tariffs on Chinese goods worth 300 billion dollars on September 1, as Trump announced.

Ministry Spokesman Gao Feng stated in a press conference that Beijing opposes the move by the White House, which will only generate more frictions in bilateral relations.

China's position is consistent and clear, 'Trade wars produce no winners. China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid of one, and it will fight one if necessary,' the spokesman noted.

Although he did not elaborate on China's countermeasures, Gao pointed out that the government will strongly respond to the US tariffs.

'If the United States acts arbitrarily, China will have to take countermeasures,' Gao stated.

According to the official, the tariffs announced by Trump will damage both Chinese and US interests and will have a negative impact on companies, US consumers and the world economy.

In that regard, the spokesman said that the delay until December 15 of the implementation of tariffs on some goods shows the damage that the Washington-promoted trade war will cause, even within US territory.

Gao expressed hope that the White House would reevaluate the measures and that both parties would continue the talks to find a mutually beneficial solution.
