Top court head proposes to extend maximum penalty

The head of Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ, Spanish acronym), Maikel Moreno proposed Tuesday to the National Constituent Assembly (ANC) to evaluate the maximum penalty length for those who commit crimes of homicide, terrorism, treason and robberies in any of its modalities.

At the Federal Legislative Palace, in Caracas, where the extraordinary session of the ANC was held, Moreno said that those committing serious crimes causing so much damage to the Venezuelan society must serve a sentence of more than 50 years.

He pointed out that the maximum penalty –30 years– imposed by the Venezuelan constitution, does not correspond to the magnitude of the damage caused.

He also called to thoroughly review the increase in punishment for corruption crimes.

"Administrative corruption deserves the severe punishment of the law, we can not continue allowing the enemies of the homeland to be enriched in an excessive way and then want to legitimize their capitals in other countries using the flag of freedom," he said.

He also considered necessary to undertake an exhaustive assessment of police forces.

In this regard, he proposed to create a unique special inspection authority that "will allow to check every new member before entering into any police force of the country, and to control the quality of those who have the task of guaranteeing the safety of all citizens," he said.

"We are ready to consolidate with you a comprehensive review of the judicial system. Today many officials of our different dependencies are attentive of this address because they have the faith and the conviction that this National Constituent Assembly will be the best space to recognize the integral work of our courts and to hear the voice that allows to recognize the truth and justice," he said.
