Venezuela Deploys Satellite Tech to Assess Quake Damage in La Guaira

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities (ABAE, in Spanish) and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB, in Spanish) are employing advanced satellite technology and real-time monitoring systems to address areas affected by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck on June 24, officials reported.

ABAE, which falls under the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology, deployed a multidisciplinary team of specialists, researchers, and scientists to La Guaira state to verify on the ground the precision of satellite data processed following the activation of international cooperation protocols.

The agency’s President Colonel Adolfo Godoy explained that coordination with strategic allies led to the activation of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters (Activation 1036) since the emergency began. This global effort enabled the processing of over 2,000 optical and radar satellite images, supplemented by data from Venezuela’s Sucre satellite (VRSS-2).

From these inputs, the Space Applications Directorate generated 182 cartographic products and nearly 200 value-added maps, according to officials. These tools enable comparative terrain analysis before and after the quakes using synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR), a technique that detects millimeter-level surface variations.

“We have established efficient management through space technology, exchanging technical information with the various state organizations and institutions,” Godoy said, adding that the data is vital for each agency to structure its response and recovery plans within its respective purview.

ABAE geographer and researcher Víctor Navarro detailed that the technology allows for delimiting collapsed areas and identifying faults in buildings, city blocks, roadways, and drainage networks. The information is delivered directly to Civil Protection and risk management agencies to optimize resources and guide search, rescue, and reconstruction operations.

In Macuto parish of La Guaira state, the FANB’s Task Force 21 Command Post implemented a real-time monitoring system to lead Operations Hope and Venezuela Reborn, according to officials. The platform was developed jointly by the Marine Infantry and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Frigate Lieutenant Luis Alberto Gómez explained that the tool was designed from the first day of the disaster. “We started developing it, and the Ministry of Science and Technology provided us with the technical advice to exploit the system’s capabilities,” he said, adding that they have the ability to see in real time the field surveys conducted by the Marine Infantry drone battalion personnel.
