Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said U.S. military aircraft were targeted at Aqaba Airport during the latest wave of retaliatory operations.
Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Aerospace Force targeted U.S. military aircraft at Jordan’s Aqaba Airport with ballistic missiles during the 21st wave of retaliatory military operations, amid continued tensions between Tehran and Washington.
In a statement, the IRGC said C-17 military transport aircraft and Boeing P-8 Poseidon multi-mission reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft belonging to the U.S. military were hit in the operation, causing “heavy damage” to several aircraft.
The statement thanked “the honorable people and dedicated members of the Jordanian military” for providing intelligence support that the IRGC said contributed to the operation.
The Iranian force also said that previous strikes had destroyed “20 hangars” housing U.S. forces in Jordan’s Azraq military area and killed “dozens of American forces.”
Aqaba Airport, located near the Red Sea and Jordan’s southern border, is primarily used as Jordan’s second-largest commercial international airport. The facility also functions as a joint-use civilian and military site that hosts U.S. military aircraft.
The IRGC said the strike followed other recent military developments in the region, including its announcement that two oil tankers attempting to travel through what it described as an unsafe route in the Strait of Hormuz were hit by explosions and forced to halt.
Iran has maintained that foreign military involvement in the strategic waterway lacks legal legitimacy and has warned that continued U.S. military operations would make the Strait of Hormuz unsafe for maritime traffic.
The latest announcements also came after reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) of a vessel on fire northwest of Kumzar, Oman, as military activity continues to intensify around one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
The IRGC’s statement represents a further expansion of military activity linked to the confrontation between Iran and the United States, extending beyond the Strait of Hormuz to sites associated with U.S. military operations in the region.
