The former Cuban president turns 95 amid the most severe energy crisis in more than seven decades.
On Tuesday, the Russian Senate expressed concern over U.S. military pressure against Cuba and judicial accusations against former President Raul Castro.
He turns 95 at a time when Cuba is experiencing its most severe energy crisis in more than seven decades as a result of the U.S. oil blockade and sanctions through which Washington seeks to impose political and economic changes on the Caribbean nation.
In March, a Russian tanker carrying 100,000 tons of crude oil arrived off the Cuban coast, partially easing the fuel shortage. Moscow has chartered at least one other vessel carrying hundreds of thousands of barrels bound for Cuba, but it has not yet reached its destination.
The text reads, “Russia reaffirms its political support for Cuba. ‘We continue to provide Cuba with our unwavering political and other support, in the formats and modalities agreed upon with our Cuban colleagues,’ declared Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Department for Latin America at the Russian Foreign Ministry, on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Moscow has repeatedly expressed its support for Cuba in the face of the tightening of the energy blockade and pressure exerted by the U.S. government, a challenge the Caribbean nation has faced in recent months.”
The full statement by the Russian Senate follows:
“The Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation expresses its profound concern over the actions by the United States aimed at creating conditions for an armed intervention into Cuba and firmly condemns the deployment of a U.S. naval strike force in the Caribbean Basin for this purpose.
The allegations by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding Army General Raul Castro Ruz, a leader of the Cuban revolution, are a blatant attempt at blackmailing the Cuban authorities.
Thirty years ago, the Cuban Air Force shot down two light planes, which resulted in the death of four individuals, including three U.S. nationals. Washington is using these events as a pretext for interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and regime change in Cuba contrary to the will of its citizens.
These aggressive U.S. actions run completely counter to the universally recognized principles and norms of international law, as well as the provisions of the UN Charter, are infringing on the legitimate rights and freedoms of the citizens of Cuba, bringing suffering to the people, and pose a serious threat to security and stability in the Caribbean Basin.
The Russian Federation senators express their firm support for the people and authorities of Cuba in their courageous defense of the sovereignty, freedom, and independence of their country, as well as a just demand for the termination of the use of force by the United States.
The Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation declares that the illegal U.S. economic, trade, financial and energy blockade of Cuba must be lifted.
The Russian Federation will continue to strengthen friendship and foster mutual assistance and bilateral cooperation with Cuba.
The Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation calls on the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and other international parliamentary organizations, as well as the parliaments of foreign states to condemn the unprecedented coercive U.S. pressure on Cuba, to call for the unconditional lifting of the U.S. economic, trade, financial and energy blockade of Cuba, and demand that Washington immediately stop its aggressive policy towards the Island of Freedom.”
