China announced on Monday the dispatch of emergency material aid worth 100 million yuan (approximately 14.7 million dollars) to Venezuela to support rescue and reconstruction efforts following last Wednesday’s earthquakes.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated at a routine press conference that the supplies will be sent “as soon as possible” and are in addition to previously provided direct financial assistance. China has also supplied satellite imagery of the affected areas to back disaster response operations.
Chinese companies operating in Venezuela and associations of the Chinese community in the country have provided engineering machinery and essential medical supplies for rescue operations, in addition to organizing rescue teams that are actively participating in search and rescue efforts, the spokesman added.
“China is willing to continue providing more support to Venezuela, in accordance with the evolution of the situation on the ground and the needs arising from the disaster,” Guo said.
The June 24 earthquakes left 1,450 dead, 3,150 injured, and 12,721 families affected according to the latest official toll.
