Russian FM Lavrov Visits India for BRICS Ministerial Meeting

He seeks to secure oil supplies to India and strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in New Delhi to participate in the ministerial meeting of the BRICS, the economic cooperation group led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

His visit will focus on guaranteeing oil supplies to India in the face of pressure from the United States and its Western allies. Before his arrival in the Asian country, the Russian foreign minister accused Washington of attempting to block the trade of its competitors.

He pointed out that the U.S. objective is to “control all major global energy supply routes using illegitimate methods against its rivals,” although he guaranteed that “India’s interests regarding Russian energy supplies will not be harmed.”

Lavrov will hold talks with Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar with the aim of intensifying bilateral energy cooperation. This objective comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for austerity measures in the country’s consumption because of the war on Iran.

The two diplomats will focus on analyzing the progress of the agreements reached during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in December 2025, as well as preparing upcoming talks between the leaders in Russia.

Lavrov and Jaishankar will also address the situation in the Middle East and their cooperation in the United Nations and the Group of 20. The BRICS ministerial meeting is the bloc’s first high-level gathering since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran on Feb. 28.

The meeting will take place in New Delhi from May 14 to 15. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to attend, and he will meet with Jaishankar and other diplomats to “discuss regional stability, multilateral cooperation and economic resilience.”

Also attending the BRICS meeting will be Foreign Ministers Mauro Vieira of Brazil, Badr Abdelatty of Egypt, Ronald Lamola of South Africa, and Sugiono of Indonesia. The presence of senior representatives from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates is also expected.
