U.S. military forces attacked another vessel in international waters on Tuesday, over unsubstained drug trafficking claims, killing one person while two crew members survived.
The command announced the strike on social media platform X but did not specify whether the incident occurred in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela or in the Pacific Ocean near Colombia, as it has typically done for previous operations. The two survivors are unusual; most such attacks have left no one alive.
The ongoing “Southern Spear” operation has now resulted in at least 186 deaths across more than 60 reported attacks since September 2025, according to U.S. Southern Command. While allegedly aimed at disrupting drug trafficking, the campaign has also served to increase pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was kidnapped in a separate U.S. military operation on January 3 of this year.
Human Rights Watch has called the operation unlawful and stated that it amounts to extrajudicial killing.
