Iran Fired Warning Missiles at U.S. Destroyers Near Strait of Hormuz

CentCom denies any ships were hit as tensions rise over new naval operation.

On Monday, the Iranian Army said it fired warning shots with missiles at United States destroyers that were attempting to approach the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman.

They were warned several times by radio about the “risk of violating the ceasefire,” Iranian military authorities said, adding that the U.S. vessels ignored repeated Iranian warnings.

“After ignoring the initial warning, the U.S.-Zionist destroyers were again warned by the Army Navy with warning shots using cruise missiles, rockets and combat drones in the vicinity of the aggressive enemy vessels,” the Iranian military said.

The Iranian Army’s announcement comes after media in the Persian country reported earlier Monday an attack on U.S. vessels, which has been denied by the U.S. Central Command.

“No U.S. vessel has been hit. U.S. forces continue supporting Operation Project Freedom and the naval blockade of Iranian ports,” U.S. Central Command said. The command is responsible for military operations in the Middle East.

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Project Freedom so that U.S. Armed Forces would “guide” merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz, although that would not include a formal military escort for the vessels.

The U.S. president said any interference with the operation to allow the transit of ships stranded in the Persian Gulf by the conflict “will be dealt with by force.” The Iranian Army has rejected that announcement and warned that any vessel, including U.S. ships, attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz will be attacked.
