The UN special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Gina Romero, accused Ecuador’s government of advancing an authoritarian course that must be halted.
In a statement issued Saturday, warned that the government is using a social transparency law – pushed by President Noboa and fast‑tracked by the parliamentary majority last August – to intimidate critical non‑governmental organisations.
The official further noted a troubling escalation in the persecution of the Constitutional Court, which she described as the only state institution that has acted as a check on some of Noboa’s decisions over the past three years.
Along with other UN experts, she has sent letters to the executive branch expressing alarm over the shrinking of civic space, the adoption of regressive laws, and attacks on constitutional judges. Additional letters have detailed the lack of protection and repeated assaults on human rights defenders, as well as on indigenous and rural communities.
Her remarks came just days after President Noboa directly criticised the United Nations. On Wednesday, he rejected concerns raised by various UN committees and experts over possible excessive use of force by security forces – including enforced disappearances – during the internal armed conflict declared against criminal groups since 2024.
