Shooting Outside Israeli Consulate in Istanbul

Turkish authorities opened an investigation to clarify the motives behind the attack.

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities confirmed that one attacker was killed and two were wounded during a shooting outside the building housing the Israeli consulate in Istanbul.

“There were three attackers. One has died and two have been wounded and detained,” Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said, noting that the attackers were carrying long guns.

The governor also confirmed that two police officers were slightly injured. The incident occurred shortly before 12:40 p.m. in the central district of Levent, outside the building whose seventh floor houses the Israeli diplomatic office, which has been inactive for two and a half years.

Israel had withdrawn all its diplomatic staff from Turkey for security reasons at the end of October 2023, after the Turkish government strongly criticized its offensive in Gaza.

The three attackers arrived in a rental car from Izmit, a city about 80 kilometers from Istanbul, Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said, adding that one of the attackers had links to a radical religious organization. “Two were brothers and one had a prior record for drugs,” the minister wrote.

According to Turkish broadcaster NTV, that organization is part of the network of the Islamic State group (IS or Daesh) in Turkey. The attackers tried to enter the building and opened fire when security guards and police officers stationed at the entrance ordered them to stop.

The Turkish government has opened a judicial investigation to clarify the motives behind the attack. In Türkiye, protests against Israel’s military actions against Gaza, the West Bank, and Iran are frequent.

Police maintain heightened security measures around Israeli diplomatic premises as well as religious and cultural centers of the Jewish community.
