Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday condemned the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list as a mechanism designed to persecute and domesticate political oppositions around the world, marking his latest criticism of Washington’s sanctions policy.
Petro, who was added to the so‑called Clinton List in October 2023 after former President Donald Trump accused him of being a drug trafficking leader and threatened serious actions against Colombia, made the remarks on his X account.
The Colombian leader argued that the far right fails to understand that humanity’s strength lies in its diverse foundation, which should not be eliminated. He called for democratic global governance as a necessary alternative.
According to Petro, the OFAC list has lost its effectiveness against organized crime, as drug trafficking operations simply mock the sanctions.
He further noted that crime bosses evade justice by negotiating with the United States, agreeing not to export cocaine to U.S. territory in exchange for protection, while expanding their operations to the rest of the world. Petro added that extradition becomes pointless under such circumstances, as drug traffickers prefer to negotiate in Miami or New York rather than face capture in Colombia.
Petro has previously criticized the Trump administration’s regional policy and its militarized approach to drug trafficking, which has resulted in more than 160 extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
