Iran To Resume Talks Under Necessary and Reasonable Conditions

Tehran links negotiations to end of naval blockade as tensions persist.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said Iran will return to the negotiating table with the United States when “necessary and reasonable” conditions are met.

Baghaei responded to a question about whether Tehran would meet again with the United States to negotiate an end to the war after uncertainty in recent days over a meeting scheduled for today in Pakistan that did not take place.

The diplomat said Iran would act “when we reach the conclusion that the necessary and reasonable conditions exist,” but he did not explain what those conditions are.

He did emphasize that the negotiations will seek to “materialize national interests and consolidate the achievements of the Iranian people by thwarting the malicious objectives of their enemies.”

Regarding the extension of the indefinite ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Baghaei said that “Iran did not initiate this war” and that its actions have been in “legitimate defense against the military aggression of the U.S. and the Zionist regime.”

Negotiations between Iran and the United States remain stalled after days of uncertainty over whether delegations led by JD Vance and Iranian official Mohamed Baqer Qalibaf would meet again in Islamabad following their first direct contact on April 11 and 12.

Tehran reiterated that it will not attend new rounds of dialogue while the naval blockade of its ports persists, a measure Washington continues to enforce despite the extension of the ceasefire.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the seizure of two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz for operating without permits. The vessels have been taken to Iran’s coast.
