Venezuelans Hold Mass Calling for Release of President Maduro

Citizens rally nearly three months after the presidential couple’s transfer to New York.

On Wednesday, a mass was held in front of the Palace of Justice in Caracas, called by citizens demanding the release of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores.

The show of popular support for a historic leader of the Bolivarian revolution comes nearly three months after his capture by U.S. forces that entered Venezuelan territory illegally on Jan. 3.

Thousands of Venezuelans gathered in an act of faith seeking to reaffirm hope for the presidential couple’s return. The event added to other religious and community activities held in different regions of the country.

Historically shaped by its religious traditions, Venezuela again used the Eucharist to express its desire to recover its leaders. Mobilizations have included social groups and organizations that have maintained demands for justice since the case began.

On Jan. 3, U.S. Military forces kidnapped President Maduro and his wife and took them to a jail in New York City.

The text reads, “The Venezuelan people gathered for a moving mass calling for the swift release of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. The religious service was a message of unity and resilience for the country.”

Charges against Maduro include alleged crimes related to drug trafficking and arms trafficking, accusations that Venezuelan authorities have denounced as unfounded and part of a campaign to justify intervention against the South American country.

More specifically, Caracas has questioned the legitimacy of those accusations, noting that an earlier charge accusing Maduro of leading the so-called “Cartel of the Suns” was withdrawn due to a lack of concrete evidence.

The situation drew international condemnation and statements from governments that questioned the U.S. military intervention.

In Venezuela, demonstrations have sought to convey a message of peace, respect for sovereignty, and national unity. An example of this are the actions of the Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who has pressed these demands in several dialogues with U.S. authorities.
