Washington uses pretexts against Iran, the Russian foreign minister claims.
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the United States does not attack countries that actually possess nuclear weapons, arguing that Washington uses pretexts to justify its strikes against Iran.
At a news conference following talks with Brunei’s Foreign Affairs Minister Erywan Yusof, Lavrov said that “the U.S. does not attack those who have a nuclear bomb,” asserting that nuclear deterrence is a key factor in the dynamics of international relations.
Lavrov also cited views from some interlocutors in the Middle East who recall the case of Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan leader who gave up his nuclear program and later met a violent end.
Lavrov said that the U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran could drive the creation of nuclear weapons not only in Iran but also among neighboring Arab countries, thereby widening the arc of proliferation and increasing the risks of instability in the Middle East.
The Russian diplomat said that, according to confirmations from the International Atomic Energy Agency and from U.S. intelligence itself, Iran was not attempting to produce nuclear weapons.
He stressed that “there was no evidence that Iran was developing nuclear weapons,” one of the central justifications used for the escalation of hostilities.
Lavrov added that the consequences of the U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran are being felt across the Middle East, where a war is effectively underway.
He said even Arab countries in the region “bear economic costs and some human losses,” underscoring the regional dimension of the crisis and the need to pursue avenues for dialogue and de-escalation.
Lavrov said Russia opposes intervention and promotes a framework of international cooperation for global nuclear security.
