The Republican leader renews criticism of allies after they reject call for naval coalition.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the United States doesn’t need the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to leave control of the strategic oil and gas waterway to the nations that depend on it.
“I wonder what would happen if we ‘finished off’ what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it, we don’t, be responsible for the so called ‘Straight’? That would get some of our non-responsive ‘Allies’ in gear, and fast!!!,” he posted on Truth Social.
The new warnings came a day after the U.S. president said NATO made “a very dumb mistake” in rejecting his call to guarantee the safety of tankers and merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz following attacks by Iran in retaliation for the war launched by the U.S. and Israel.
Trump reminded “all of those absolute ‘fools’ out there, that Iran is considered, by the entire World, as the NUMBER ONE STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM. We are taking them out quickly!”
On Tuesday, the U.S. president criticized the Atlantic alliance as well as Australia, Japan and South Korea after they rejected his request to create a military coalition to secure navigation in the waterway through which 20% of the world’s maritime hydrocarbon trade passes, responding that this was not a war they started.
Trump insisted that as “the most powerful country in the world,” the United States doesn’t need “anyone’s help” because his forces have managed to “decimate the Iranian army.”
Since Feb. 28, U.S.-Israeli forces have killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, much of the Islamic Republic’s military leadership, and hundreds of civilians and children.
Although Washington is already claiming victory in the conflict, Tehran continues to respond with attacks against Israel and countries in the region where the U.S. maintains embassies and military presence.
