President Putin to Host Cuban FM Rodriguez Amid Energy Crisis

Russia reiterates its opposition to the U.S. oil blockade.

On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

“It is clear that this meeting is particularly significant given the difficult period our friendly and brotherly country is going through,” Peskov said, referring to the energy crisis caused by the oil blockade against Cuba implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that Russia firmly opposes the U.S. blockade and reiterated that his country will continue to support Cuba, maintaining a cooperation relationship that has existed for decades and has solidified a strategic alliance between Moscow and Havana.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reaffirmed the Putin administration’s stance on the current Cuban crisis.

“Cuba lives under an illegitimate and inhumane economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States,” she said, adding that pressure on Cuba has intensified following the U.S. military action against Venezuela.

“We will continue to provide assistance and support to the brotherly people of Cuba, a friendly country and strategic partner of Russia,” Zakharova said, noting that the two countries have maintained a “solid relationship of mutual respect and support” for nearly seven decades.

On Wednesday, during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Bruno Rodriguez reaffirmed Cuba’s willingness to engage in respectful dialogue on equal terms with the United States.

The Cuban diplomat said his country will defend its sovereignty and independence and maintain its “unchangeable” course despite Washington’s pressures, which he described as a threat not only to Cuba but also to multilateralism.

Rodriguez described relations between Cuba and Russia as “historic, fraternal, special and strategic” and expressed confidence that cooperation will continue “above any circumstance.”

Lavrov, for his part, said Russia is calling on the United States to “show common sense” and “refrain from plans for a naval blockade of the Island of Freedom.”

“I would like to reiterate that the actions of the United States, which issued a special decree declaring Cuba a threat, are absolutely unacceptable,” the Russian foreign minister said.

Lavrov criticized the decree defining the supposed Cuban threat, highlighting its connection to Russia, a country the Trump administration labels as “a hostile and malicious state.”
