Nearly 6,500 Venezuelans Apply for The Amnesty Law

The Bolivarian government frames this law as step toward national reconciliation.

On Thursday, Venezuelan lawmaker Jorge Arreaza said 6,487 citizens have applied to benefit from the Law of Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence approved a week ago.

As president of the special commission for the law’s implementation, Arreaza has processed 3,365 applications, while the Public Defender’s Office handled 2,971 cases. Another 127 amnesty petitions were submitted through private defense attorneys and 24 through parties authorized under the law.

The Venezuelan lawmaker said 185 people deprived of liberty have been released from prison, while 3,266 citizens obtained full freedom after complying with precautionary measures or house arrest. Currently, 3,011 cases remain under review to verify whether they meet the 13 conditions established in the Amnesty Law.

“There are many hopes and obligations for you. We and the justice system must review the cases that need to be reviewed, correct what must be corrected, and proceed in accordance with our laws,” Arreaza said.

As part of the implementation process, authorities opened a dedicated office to centralize and expedite the receipt of new applications, seeking greater administrative speed and transparency in processing.

Culture Minister Ernesto Villegas, who is accompanying the commission, highlighted coordination among different branches to advance the review of cases.

“We are making history. Tomorrow’s historians will ask what each person’s conduct was, and I celebrate that there has been a convergence of wills,” he said, emphasizing that applying the law is not a sign of institutional weakness but a political decision aimed at reconciliation within the constitutional framework.

The figures were presented after a technical meeting between the legislative commission and the “Program for Peace and Coexistence,” during which a joint schedule was agreed upon to deepen the analysis of pending cases.

The Amnesty Law seeks to reduce political conflict and strengthen public trust in Venezuela’s judicial system, ensuring that the benefit applies only to those who meet the established criteria.

Monitoring of the freedoms granted and the evaluation of new applications will continue in the coming days as the executive and legislative branches consolidate the policy as part of their strategy for national stability and pacification.
