Trump administration’s actions in the Caribbean sea threaten global energy markets.
On Sunday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro sent a letter to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), accusing the United States of seeking to seize the vast oil reserves of the South American nation.
Addressed to OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais, the Venezuelan letter states that U.S. actions could severely affect the balance of the global energy market. The full text of the letter follows.
“I have the honor of addressing you to extend my cordial greetings and, at the same time, to refer to the growing and illegal threats made by the U.S. government against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
As you have surely observed, since mid-August, the U.S. President Donald Trump has carried out a campaign of harassment and threats against Venezuela that places regional and international peace, security, and stability in clear danger.
As part of that campaign, several U.S. military assets have been deployed in the Caribbean region, including more than 14 warships and 15,000 troops. In addition, U.S. authorities have carried out more than 20 bombings against small vessels, resulting in the extrajudicial killing of more than 80 people.
Throughout these months, there have been constant and repeated explicit threats by U.S. authorities to use force against Venezuelan territory, in blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and other international law instruments.
Secretary General, Venezuela formally denounces before OPEC and the OPEC+ mechanism that the U.S. government intends to seize Venezuela’s vast oil reserves—the largest on the planet—through the use of lethal military force against the country’s territory, people and institutions.
This intention not only contradicts the provisions that govern peaceful coexistence among nations, but also places in grave danger the stability of Venezuelan oil production and the international market.
The world knows very well the harmful consequences generated in other oil-producing countries as a result of military interventions by the United States and its allies.
Venezuela will remain firm in defending its natural energy resources and will not succumb to any type of blackmail or threat.
Dear OPEC Secretary General and OPEC+ members, I hope to count on your best efforts to help stop this aggression, which is growing stronger and seriously threatens the balance of the international energy market, both for producing and consuming countries.
Finally, I respectfully request that a copy of this letter be distributed among the member countries of our organization and the OPEC+ mechanism, and that you call for sovereign unity without external interference. With no other matter to address, and reiterating my highest esteem and consideration, I remain yours sincerely,
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.”
